Had you made your comparisons around Ho Chi Minh and Saddam Hussein they would have carried more water.

"From his father, Ho received a strong Confucian upbringing. During his childhood he noticed the bad things that the French colonizers and the monarchist government did to the citizens."

en.wikipedia.org

Ho was anti-occupation by colonizers and anti-monarchial rule. He was a man of principle and compassion for the people. He was educated in the west and a true man of the people. He had earned the trust and devotion from communist followers... he also earned the fear and loathing felt by Catholics and people who had personal wealth.

How does that compare with Saddam?

The people of North Vietnam were united behind Ho and he was attempting to convert the south to unite under his ideas, eventually Vietnam was united and is now a thriving and relatively peaceful state. How does that compare with the modern day conflict in Iraq?

A positive result is more important in iraq than in vietnam, so the loss in iraq is of far greater significance. Post vietnam i was told by folks who would know such things that many enemies of the US were struck about good a fight we put up and even though we were defeated, they respected our courage and resolve of helping our allies (unlike the euros). I was reading somewhere yesterday or the day before the same things about some of the iraqi insurgents marvelling on how americans are willing to sacrifice for their allies today as well. I guess thats a good thing.
