The "If" is unnecessary. The phrase in question: "[Bush] Not generally known for intellectual curiosity ..." Is Bush known for his intellectual curiosity? I think he's a conviction politician who is trying to protect America and do what he thinks is right. I think that was written much better in the article. He doesn't change course with every poll like Clinton did. Ignoring the comment on Clinton. You're correct, Bush doesn't give a shit what the American people want. jttmab
