... The new quad-core AMD Opteron “Barcelona” processors at 2.60GHz can deliver 21% performance gain compared to quad-core Intel Xeon 5355 (2.66GHz) in SPECint_rate2006 and 50% speed improvement over Intel Xeon 5355 in SPECfp_rate2006 benchmarks. ...

Weren't those figures 40% and 70% earlier I wonder , or were they comparing to older Intel CPUs ?

Buggi,

But to cripple a possible good
version just to save 5mm^2 doesn't make really sense at least
to me.

AMD has learned the segmentation from Intel, and just can't let go of it. Never mind that Conroe has put almost entire AMD portfolio of products in sub $100 ASP category, AMD is insisting in splitting it further, creating ever lower segments...

BTW, the funny thing is that the cost of the 5mm^2 of silicon at 65nm, rounding to nearest dollar rounds to zero. But ASP penalty is certainly non-zero. ASP is AMD's biggest problem. The way to improve them is not to cripple the chips further, but to make better chips at higher ASPs...
