A 2S MCM server has 4 Intel dies, no? 2S Clovertown, for example.

Compare the MB cost of a 4 die Intel server to the MB cost of a
4 die AMD server. The Intel MB is a whole lot cheaper.
And the four dies are cheaper.

Yes, the AMD dies are bigger, but the pricing difference is far
above the difference in manufacturing cost. If AMD priced
the Opteron 88xx dies differently and arranged for truly low-cost
MBs, their 4 die servers (4S) could have taken a lot of share from the
Intel 2S world. But that would have required out-of-the-box
thinking that their marketing dept. lacked.

What I'm saying is that AMD could have blunted the MCM by
selling two packaged 8xx dies for a similar cost to an MCM.
Then 4S/4 die servers would have entered the mainstream, and
I firmly believe the additional revenue would more than
compensate for the reduced margin.
