From Santa Barbara, head down to LAX along 405 and on down 405 until you get to 73, then divert onto 73. It's only a small part of the total journey for you so you might be better to avoid the carnage on 405 unless you are traveling at the right time of day. 15 is a long way around, but I prefer to be moving than not so I guess you can reliably keep moving along that way, skirting Los Angeles. 73 is just a nice break rather than a road all the way. In rush hours it would pay for the trip in time saved. In non-rush times it's just nicer to be there plus safer etc. You would still have to go all the way through Los Angeles from Santa Barbara.

I think 73 was built in the late 1990s [can't remember really when I first came across it]. Ah, here it is, 1996: en.wikipedia.org Cyberspace is amazing.
