I am not sure your assessment is correct.
In fact we had such a horrible experience with T20 and T40 series. As you know IBM offloaded their crappy hard disk division to Hitachi because of such a horrible quality. Almost everybody had at least one or two crashes in our office where we have 1000s of TPs.
Latest T60 series seems to be holding well.

I have an early T43 ThinkPad, made right after Lenovo took over.

The T43 was originally an IBM designed product, when Lenovo took over they basically just switched name plates. The newer models (T60s and T61s) don't seem to be holding up as well. When Thinkpads were IBM they were the most reliable (overall, they did have one model that was a lemon..) laptop on the market for several years running.
