In the long run it's always cheaper and more effective to automate. Any repetitive procedure that is frequently used is a prime target for automation. Machines can work 24/7 without complaint and need no kidney or lunch breaks.. Slaves, before the civil war, were used mostly for picking cotton, a labor intensive job. Even more difficult was separating the seeds from the cotton. Voila!, in steps Eli Whitney and his cotton gin.

I'm very familiar with the problems you ran into with landscapers.....they only pay the immigrants 10-11 dollars/hour and love their work ethic. And they will charge you what the traffic will bear. The immigrants are the new slaves. It's true of any contractor who can use unskilled labor. Had you wanted to, you could have gone to a spot where the day laborers show up every morning and hired some yourself. You need to supply transportation and tools. Supervision is your job also, but for routine landscaping, that is minimal. But you're right, very few speak english. Contractors who can speak spanish have a real advantage.
