In the city near here (Ottawa), bus service is actually fairly efficient. There are a couple of main sets of bus transitways that cross the city -- these being apart from the main road system. There are also routes throughout the main streets of the city. Ottawa also a couple of short light rail lines, with more planned for the future, although some of the plans have been changed recently. Most of the larger shopping malls have a bus station area that is often sheltered and accessed via walkways from the mall. Most main bus stops have shelters. The region has a population of about 900K. There's bus service to some of the outlying communities. Unfortunately, the service stops just short of the township I live in -- actually this is no longer a township since amalgamation by the city. I expect that bus service will be available sometime in the next couple of years in this area.

I've never actually given this much thought before, but I can't remember seeing many buses in mid-sized cities that I've visited in the U.S. - at least, nothing as noticeable as what I would see here or into Toronto. Maybe it's just that the cities I visited were not ones which have built up public transit systems. In the case of Ottawa, it has 2 major universities, and then many federal government buildings, so decent public transit is a necessity.

The Feds may cancel your money, which has much more important uses in Iraq, but I read in the Oil Drum that the ridership on DC's Metro hit a record. Somewhere over 2 mil riders.
