Ice ages take about 40 years to take hold it is thought. The last one receded from Canada about 6,000 years ago.

Mastodons, a moderately sized (3 metre at the shoulder) elephant-like creature, went extinct about 10,000 years ago, possibly from hunting pressure and tuberculosis. It was a grazing animal and may have come into contact with humans and bison both of whom were known to carry tuberculosis/brucellosis at the time.

Mammoths probably lived in Alaska until about 3500 years ago. There is a possibility that they lived into the 19th century in Russia.
