"I ask because I hear numbers like over 50% of births are to illegals"

I'd be surprised. With 12 million illegals, most of whom are male, and a population of around 300 million would mean that they would be popping babies out at a world class rate.

Eric, > The longevity one is easy - McDonalds. :-)

I'm lovin' it!

Like I said before, I think universal health care is all but inevitable. All we need is for the Dems to control D.C. and an economic recession to convince people they need big government's help.

Once that's in place, government can start banning all forms of unhealthy lifestyles. Trans-fat is just a start. Even Michael Moore might be forced to lose weight ... ;-)

Can you determine from your sources whether infant mortality rates in the USA exclude births of "Americans" to illegals? I ask because I hear numbers like over 50% of births are to illegals today and in mexico the infant mortality rate is around 19 deaths per 1000 so they could be contributing negatively to the statistics and making a good system (ours) look far worse than it really is on this metric.

Perhaps we need a better yard stick to measure our health systems performance than the two you used or at least a breakdown by ethicity or citizenship.

I can't imagine how 12 million people, supposedly mostly male, are producing > 50% of the babies in a country of 300 million people. Mexicans would have to be as fertile as cockroaches.
