First powered flight of a heavier than air machine was in 1890 by Clement Ader, steam engine on bat-winged monoplane. He flew 60 yards.

Ader's Steam Powered Machine.

Langley's unmanned machines flew before the Wrights in 1896.

Gilmore, Pearse, Jatho and Watson all claimed flight of heavier than air powered machines before the Wrights between 1902 and 1903.

First real under-power take off unassisted by catapult or headwind was Santos Dumont in Brazil in 1906. This has also been claimed by the Romanian Vuia, in March of that year.

Karl Jatho also supposedly flew in 1903.

First helicopter flight was 1907.

First CDN flight was the Silver Dart in 1908.
