Well let's see. Been gone a week at Summer camp with 27 scouts. Since both our boys went, I asked my LB to attend. She camped next to me in a tent for the week. She slept on an air mattress on the ground, in a tent for 6 days and 5 nights. She did good!

She and another leader took care of our first year scouts. They were with them each day. I kinda did everything and nothing. I worked with the scoutmaster all week, kept the kids in somewhat of discipline, cajoled, exhorted, yelled and counseled them on how to work together to clean up their camp sites after meal time. Who'd a thunk doing dishes and clearing the table was soooo traumatic. Think of "Mr A" in the background of every meal saying "It is the patrols job to clear the table and the clean up persons job to do the pots and pans. Everyone clears the table, scrapes plates and pots and pans clean, puts excess food in coolers, wipes off tablecloth, then you can go play." Every meal, everyday. The inevitable response was "But I cleaned MY plate and MY spot." Of course the response was "It is the patrols job to clear the table and the clean up persons job to do the pots and pans. Everyone clears the table, scrapes plates and pots and pans clean, puts excess food in coolers, wipes off tablecloth, then you can go play."

Eventually they got it. Nah, they didn't. Even Sat morning, as we were waiting to pack we had scouts not clearing tables. Incredible.

Since my older scout was away with the rangers I kinda hung out with the older scouts who stayed in camp. We went shot gun shooting, .22 shooting, muzzle loader shooting and archery shooting. Apparently it is can be shot, I'm the guy to see! LOL

My oldest went on the Ranger program and we did not see him from Sunday until Fri morn. Then he, the youngest and my LB ALL did the mile swim. I did not. I am a sinker more than a swimmer, so I watched. Plus I did it years ago and remembered how bad I felt afterwards. My oldest did the ranger program all week, then showed up and did the mile swim. He's the only one who did that. He gets out of the water not even breathing hard or remotely appearing tired. Hard to believe all he does is play computer games and drag race.

It was a good week. Now back at work and trying to catch up. 73 e-mails and 7 phone calls. Not too bad for a week away.

Coming up in scouts, for our older scouts (14 and up) we are making knives. We are starting with straight bar stock, having them design their knife, cut and grind the blade out, give it an edge, then we are going to harden the steel through heating to 1450F at which point it will no longer hold a magnet, then we will quench it and put a final edge on the blade.

We're also going Whitewater rafting in TN on the river that was used in the Olympics. A float trip is scheduled for Sept. Lots going on in the summer. For a family of 4 to participate in these activities, it is expensive! These couple months have cost us over $1k in fees just for scouting. How's that for an unplanned cost?! Next summer 3 going to Boundary waters? $1200 - $1500..... Plus summer camps another $800. Who'd a thunk it was so costly?
