The Saudis (who throw their money behind extremist Whabbist jihadist teaching, in a 'Devil's bargain' in an effort to preserve their corrupt Monachy...), and the military dictatorship in Pakistan, allied with their fellow Sunnis and promoters of Whabbism the Saudis, and in a quite similar 'Devil's bargain' with Taliban extremists to preserve Mushariff's Dictatorship against the threat of Democracy returning. Message 23687241 And Bush has --- for whatever reasons --- been preserving the root of the problem, trying to divert attention from the truth of the matter: that our putative 'allies' ARE the heart of the jihadist threat against the West.

"The Saudis are a problem that I can not get my mind around short of vaporization to be perfectly honest." Or, we could just stop preserving them, treating them with kid gloves, spending billions to protect them from their Shiite enemies. (It might actually be QUITE HELPFUL for American national interests... I mean long-term strategic interests like the advance of Democracy, rule of law, religious and civil freedoms, Capitalism, etc., it the Sunni bloc were to become embroiled in a more direct conflict with the Shiites.... That might be the single best way for the Middle East to advance into modernity and a more secular approach to government --- to have the extremists on both sides discredit their causes and exhaust their societies first, all on their own and without Western meddling.)
