IMHO China has only one main advantage. A huge supply of forces. But, I doubt they even have the logistical support to move many of them around. In any event, I hate to see this kind of talk. I would like to have the Chinese as our Bosom buddies. I am sure they realize we would never invade them, however they do have a lot of pride, built up over EONS of culture. Saber rattling in their face would not be good IMHO. Handled properly, I could see China an ally similar to Japan in the future. As they become more wealthy they could be an outstanding EXPORT partner. jdn

Uncle, we are very far ahead of the Chinese. It's time for the US to suggest that China, not us, is the Paper Tiger.

Hi C2,
A new paper tiger may be under construction.

In the last 20 years we have retired over 200 Navy Ships or 1/3 of our fleet.
And fully 35% of USAF aircraft.
These are losses that were not replaced.

In the past 15 years our armed forces strength has dropped precipitously:
Army dropped from 610,000 to 505,000.
Navy from 534,000 to 341,000
USMC from 184,000 to 179,000
USAF from 466,000 to 341,000

siadapp.dmdc.osd.mil

In that same 15 years China's military spending has increased every year for a total increase of at least 20x. Chinese spending is still much lower than ours but their production and labor costs are much lower than ours too.

We have been wearing out our equipment at an alarming rate for five years. The Chinese are building technologically advanced equipment that is all new.

We have been chopping and hacking our military strength for 15 years. The Chinese have building their military capabilities.

Presently the Chinese have over 7 million in uniform and growing. The US has 1.3 million and shrinking.

And the slashing continues. In the past 12 months USNAV strength dropped 14,000, USAF dropped 10,500.

Therein lies the reason a confrontation with the Chinese will have to go nuclear.

If you think a Chinese/American conflict will go nuclear, you need to read this article. It won't because our nuclear forces are, in a word, unbelievably strong and focused.

The Chinese have sufficient nuclear capability to destroy dozens of our cities and they are building more. Meanwhile we have been reducing our weapon stockpile. Yes, it is true, we still have more. But and this is a big but. The advantage of having more is only significant if we use our nukes first. And even then it likely will not prevent the loss of many US cities.

Nuclear warfare has one huge difference with today's conflicts.
First strikes are designed to be debilitating to the degree that they wipe out the opponents desire and capability to fight. IMO a country that lacks the stomach and the skillsets
to successfully fight AQ, will have no stomach for initiating nuclear warfare. And our opponents know it.

Our superior nuclear arsenal has not prevented thousands of attacks against our armed forces. Why should we think it will begin to do so anytime soon?

are so far ahead of the Chinese in naval and aerial warfare that the Chinese would be foolhardy to go after Taiwan.

The Chinese are extremely patient. The balance is tipping their way at an increasing rate. They can wait.
