I have two early military photos of Mt Rushmore being fashioned out of the rock. They were handed down, probably from my grandfather. They were in boxes of collectible photo's which had been handed down into Mom's hands. They are larger than 8 by 10's I believe. I, too, love Mt Rushmore. This is such a fascinating earth -one could think that the faces were always there to be revealed and just waiting for skilled hands to remove the rock surrounding them. :) Just like people, and many of us seem to remain disintegrating rock without finding out what greatness lies within and is residing dormant.. waiting... Grandkid sitting in Michigan now. Three were dropped off at camp on Sunday. Am becoming adept at putting together puzzles, watching young people think, and feeding the hamster - Henry, by name <wink> Yesterday the three of us went to Kroger to pick up some bread and salad. These four absolutely love salad and the seven year old thinks it is just right for every dinner. There was a sale of my favorite Sobe Green Tea which I can't get in Cinci area anymore (all the stores only carry 'lean' green tea - sigh - and it is far to 'sweet'.) I picked up ten bottles and husband and I decided to pack it in the floor of the back of the Honda where the battery cables are kept. One just picks up the floor and hooks it to the ceiling and there is more storage. I reached in to put in a bottle and the hanging floor snapped off the ceiling and sliced my arm. The neighbors now know Jesus... (thank God I do :) I grasped my arm and ran toward the house... what a picture we were... a grandmother running into the house to clean away the blood and review the damage, a grandfather who is perfectly fine except for the balance problems developed in his knees and can't run, and the grandkid watching me lean over the sink trying not to cry as I ran clean water into the stinging slices and tried to save the skin so that it would heal more evenly. To make a long story short - I now have a natural 'tattoo' running down a quarter of my left forearm, hand and middle finger (which I, ahem, she coughs, never use anyway in a rude manner). I looked at my right arm and the disappearing bruise left from a visit to the hospital and the left arm with a bruise that would win a competition. I know the temperature is in the nineties and not long sleeve shirt weather. I decide to just forget about this being a world that prides itself on beauty and to let other's shudder or think my husband has beaten me up... LOL...I keep on my short sleeves and after dinner Joe drove me to Caribou Coffee which I can now drink again - thank you God.. and treated myself to a Cold Press.. sooo good.... I am sitting here now, sipping on caffeine writing to you. We are alive, happy, and the children left us two freezers and refrigerators FULL of food. We only have to find, defrost, cook, and place in the oven or microwave. We are in a virtual playground plus son hooked us both up to computers before they left... I don't want to travel to Europe, Asia or any where else. I'd love to see the U.S. first. I think we have a lot to offer and no need to rush out and see some other country when we have the finest there is to offer in our own backyard.

Yesterday, we went to Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. I hate to say it, but after seeing Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore was a real let-down. Yes, Rushmore is impressive, and represents the best of America. However, as a matter of scale and ambition, Crazy Horse has it all over Rushmore. This monument to American Indians has been in the works for 50 years. It was more than 50 years ago that Chief Standing Bear of the Oglala Sioux approached sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to sculpt a memorial to the American Indian in the Black Hills. Ziolkowski took on the project and work began in 1952, the year I was born. What really impressed me is Ziollkowski, and then his family after his death in 1982, refused federal financing. They were concerned the government would not follow through. He believed in private enterprise, and was willing to undertake a project that would outlive him even though federal financing would have speeded up the project completion. Ziolkowski: Ziolkowski and Standing Bear: I visited the site in 1968 and was not much impressed (as a callow teenager, nothing much impressed me). Nothing was visible on the mountain. This year, however, the face of Chief Crazy Horse is complete, and much of the sculpting of the mountain is complete. It may take another 50 years to complete, but when this is done, it will be magnificent. By way of comparison, the entire statue will be over 9 stories tall. The Mt. Rushmore heads stand 90' tall. The 4 heads at Mt. Rushmore would fit inside the head and shoulder area of Crazy Horse. I don't mean to minimize Rushmore, but after seeing the Crazy Horse memorial, Mt.
