This is all so dreadfully depressing. I don't know how Bush can live with himself after creating this unholy mess.

Easy. He's a sociopath.

Another book recommendation. I'm reading Bob Shrum's No Excuses: Concessions from a Serial Campaigner.

If you follow politics somewhat addictively, like the inner workings of campaigns, and enjoy good story telling from a liberal/progressive point of view, this book is definitely recommended.

Shrum begins his political participation at a national level in the Kennedy campaign of 1960 but doesn't have genuine access to insider stories until his participation in the McGovern campaign. Several interesting stories including the back and forths of the Eagleton pick. He had conflicts with Carter so was on and off the bus fairly quickly but has some cutting stories to tell. I just finished reading the Ted Kennedy campaign in 1980, culminating in the spectacular speech Kennedy gave to the convention.

It's great reading for those parts of the day in which your concentration isn't at its best. But you love to hear good stories well told.
