Sears Expects 4th-Quarter Profit Below Analysts Estimates on Lower Same-Store Sales

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (AP) -- Sears Holdings Corp. said Monday it expects fourth-quarter earnings below analysts estimates on lower same-store sales as well as more promotions and markdowns.
The department store operator anticipates profit between $350 million and $470 million, or $2.59 per share and $3.48 per share.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial predict fourth-quarter net income of $4.43 per share.

Sears reported domestic same-store sales fell 3.5 percent during the holiday season on softness in Kmart seasonal categories and Sears apparel and tools, partially offset by higher home electronics sales.

Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, is a key indicator of retailer performance since it measures growth at existing stores rather than newly opened ones.

More promotions and markdowns, along with increased home electronics sales, led to a gross margin decline of about 200 basis points. Home electronics typically have a lower margin rate.

Sears forecast full-year earnings of $744 million to $864 million, or $5.13 per share to $5.96 per share.

Analysts expect full-year profit of $6.64 per share.
