SS is actually in very good fiscal shape. Medicare on the other hand is a big mess that needs attention right away. People like to lump them together because SS is doing so well it ruins the argument if you talk about it by itself.

We can't afford to go without those payroll taxes. The deficit would baloon without those payroll taxes.
