Being cynical about it is OK, I guess, but renters pay property tax, too, because their landlords charge them for it and pass it along to the government. As long as someone owns the building, the government is OK with that.

There's that element, also mucho lobbyists from the NAR, FNM, MBA, etc, etc. Big bucks lining politicians coffers. If they had a referendum asking people "Would you support higher taxes in order to move margina buyers into homes" (which is the honest question), I'm pretty sure the answer would be a resounding no.
