Thanks, ElM, but I think this thread is too valuable to pollute with politics. You will not see me discuss political issues here.

It seems that the best investment/economics threads studiously avoid political discussion of any nature. There is a very good reason for this: the participants, all of whom are talented and informed, naturally hold diverse political opinions. When these opinions are strongly held, conflict is inevitable if they are aired. Harsh words lead to the impairment of non-political discussion.

There are plenty of places at SI in which to engage in all aspects of political discussion, from food fights to thoughtful discourse. My opinion is that they should be used for their intended purpose.

Exceptions of course are necessary, i.e., the effect of politics on economic matters. For example, I see that foundation has brought up Mexico's political woes into the discusion, which I think is appropriate given the substantial economic impact Mexico has on the US and on energy matters. But this kind of political discussion is not the airing of political opinions, which I think is dangerous for obvious reasons.
