"Then why are we in Iraq, ...

We are in Iraq because we went to war against the regime of Saddam. The outcome of winning that war left us with some responsibility to support the Iraqi people who would otherwise have become victims of genocidal wars until a victor would be named. The character of the usual suspects hoping to win such wars is tyrannical and brutally oppressive in nature. The mission of our military has been to remain in Iraq until an autonomous government of the people could secure the nation in a relatively equitable manner.

This mission has never been a clear cut operation and has been required to evolve around some twists and turns do to insurgencies and foreign terrorist interests.

Where have you been? Oh yeah, you've been here barking about some wild eyed Bush conspiracies the whole time.
