I agree. The one great advantage of microcredit has been direct lending. I imagine, though, it is like just about everything else, a great idea until it is scaled up, at which time bureaucratic bloat takes over.

The Gates Foundation is making some attempts in this area, bypassing governments and NGO's when possible.

What we spend on foreign aid is a pittance compared to what we're spending on the stupid war in Iraq. If even 1/100 th of the foreign aid is useful, it's better spent than the 12 billion a month we flush down the shitter in that war. Yet, not much complaint! Why is that?
