That was not new news to anybody...Bush had at his disposal dozens of Mid East experts plus Israeli intelligence to advise him on that...
Why didn't Bush reason that way.??... He was told by Chalabi that only 1000 troops were needed to topple Saddam and the people would rise up and support the "topplers".... Bush, Cheney, et al had their own objectives which didn't much give a rat's ass about what happened after Saddam fell. But they were sure "democracy would break out" cause Chalabi said it would, and as is his wont he selected intel that told him what he wanted to hear. It didn't seem to occur to them that the 2 week "victory" ie Mission Accomplished, did not destroy the Iraqi army particularly the 60,000 man Republican Guard which just melted into the countryside and cities. The many ammunition dumps that were found were left unguarded due to lack of troops and we are now seeing what happened to much of those munitions.

But the crux is, imo, that the fundamental reason for the invasion was the oil....everyone knows our domestic supplies run out in about 30 years or so, so getting control of the second largest reserves in the world must have seemed like a brilliant idea. Invading Iraq and dumping Saddam looked like a piece of cake and it would make Bush look like the great liberator. He should have occupied the oil fields and left the rest of the country alone.
