Florida gay library mired in controversy

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 11 (UPI) -- City officials in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., are becoming increasingly divided regarding the creation of a library oriented toward the local gay community.

While city commissioners recently approved the library and the sexually oriented materials it will offer, Fort Lauderdale's mayor has been extremely vocal in his opposition of the facility and its target audience, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel said Wednesday.

The media collection, which is to include titles such as "Arab Slave Boys," will reside in Holiday Park's ArtSpace library.

Mayor Jim Naugle has opposed the creation of the library on public grounds from the beginning and has publicly made numerous offensive remarks regarding people with alternative sexual lifestyles. Naugle has refused to apologize for those comments and recently the Fort Lauderdale official took them a step further by referring to some of his fellow citizens as "happy homosexuals."

"If I've learned one thing through this," Naugle said, "it's that there are a lot of happy homosexuals in Fort Lauderdale."
