That is true. Nixon was very bright (unlike GWB) and I think he really wanted to serve his country. I watched a good doco on him the other day. When he resigned over the Watergate repercussions the Russians couldn't believe that this was the real reason. They thought he was a great leader, and that he was destroyed by a powerful faction in the US that was against the SALT treaty and other measures Nixon took to thaw the cold war.
