"And then, the Puritans moved to the South and became Southern Baptists?" They share Calvinist roots. However, that type of religious intolerance wouldn't fly in the Old South. There was a strong Scottish influence, and that means there wasn't a lot of tolerance of being pushed around. So there were/are all kinds of splinter sects with varying degrees of differences in canon, and they all more or less got along together. If not, well, someone would start shooting until things "died" down...
