No, I don't like that alternative. And I don't think it was realistic to assume it.

Why not? What does it involve but expecting Saddam to behave just as he had behaved before? I mean, what could be more likely than that? Tell me one single thing is unrealistic about it.

No, but that is where the leadership was. It wasn't as decentralized as it has become. Perhaps it would have become decentralized anyway

As I mentioned before, that would have involved invading Pakistan. Not an easy prospect. And how do you know that al Qaeda has become more decentralized? It had local commanders scattered all over before 9/11 - where was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, where was Zarqawi, where was al Masri? Afganistan, Sudan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, they were all over. Do you have any solid evidence that they only just became decentralized?

Attacking Iraq--a natural enemy of AQ, was not a smart thing to do.

Oh man, this was the CIA's delusion, that Iraq was a natural enemy of AQ. And boy, have we suffered for it. The only ones fighting this delusion were the supposedly unrealistic neocons.

There is no such thing as natural enemies when the two parties share a third enemy. You should know that. Saddam had no problem allying with AQ against the US, just as Iran has no problem allying with Hamas against Israel. They may hate each other ideologically, but that's no hindrance.

Who was the US allied with in WWII? Stalin, right? Talk about natural enemies there! But we allied against Hitler.
