How can anyone know how much detergent to use for laundry? Obviously, the directions on the detergent bottle calls for way more than necessary.

I recently ran my dishwasher through its first cycle only and did not add detergent, then opened it up to find suds everywhere in all the water in the bottom. So, even though it had gone through a complete wash/rinse cycle previously, it was still showing suds. That would mean my "clean" dishes weren't completely rinsed. What to do about that?
