what am I not getting or you aren't getting? I know typed messages make it hard to understand context - so let me go through it again - you post about EVIL hierarchacal system per 1984, I try to show non-hierarchacal china few decades ago was not as good for their citizens as the system they have today - now in your most recent reply you say no time in history has that been the case. So too make sure I understand - you are saying there has always been a middle class in china per your 1984 quote making reference to the middle class using the lows for selfishness?

It mostly appears from here that it's a mountain/molehill situation and the context and generalities of 'net messages and posters is a barrier to understanding. I posted the 1984 quote just as an extension and another view on your general comments - nothing more or less.

The hierarchy area of the 1984 quote I read as simply saying that there always is one, and not that it's innately evil or that a full 3 level hierarchy with similar proportions as western countries did or did not exist in China.

The little I do know about Chinese history leads me to believe that there was a middle class (even if it's just defined as low level bureaucrats or black market folk. etc.) albeit quite small, but I'm not a historian... and can be wrong.
