Since we offer both free breakfasts and lunches in the schools, I have a hard time with the "can't perform because hungry" theme.
Teachers at the elem level are pretty alert to the signs of a hungry child, and can help make sure he gets signed up for the breakfasts.
Some of my parttime accompanying jobs were at elem schools in the early mornings, and the kids would wander in with boxes of cereal, juice, fruits. I couldn't help but notice that some of these kids were wearing namebrand clothes.

I'm just finishing Black Rednecks and White Liberals. Same old Sowell; penetrating analysis backed by exhaustive research.

He, and others, have done a lot of sober analysis on our educational system deficiencies. But the ranting idiots keep getting the headlines.
