Well past is prologue. It is a spiral, so it will never end up in the same place. Ok, I will give you a widening spiral, but from any point in the lower point, a line may drawn upward and radially to a similar point, of greater technology and faster evolution, but similar character. People are the common arbiter and they cannot change their spots.

Peter the great thought that English Parliamentarianism was inappropriate to the Russian reality. Some think that although much changed, Russia still thinks the same way.

At least some kind of comfort can be found in believing great civilizations are forwardly predictable.

Hitler always thought so, and his prediction of national reaction to his military forays, based on national character were uncanny. If he could have taken off the blinders a bit more, he perhaps could have seen that the Russian habit of self sacrifice and their technological bent would eventually with the help of mother winter and the Germanic over organization, reducing the yields of their technologies, would overcome his own pretensions.

So know what you may eat, but don't bite off more than you can chew. Or it will chew you.
