I'll sound like a broken record but the Democratic experience in the 80's is still the best example I can think of; the current Republican leadership needs to get thumped badly in a series of elections before the party will accept a new message and new leaders and get back to a governing philosophy in tune with more than a rabid minority of the electorate. We are a few steps down that road which began in November 2006 but I don't think we will see the real impact until 2010 or so when the 2012 candidates start their campaigns.
