NOTE: We read all messages, but we receive quite a large amount of mail every day, so the use of automation allows us to respond more quickly and saves PETA resources that are vital for our efforts to make a difference for animals. We hope you will forgive the use of this form letter, but we believe that this information should address most concerns or questions you may have about this matter. Thank you for contacting PETA about Michael Vick’s indictment on charges related to dogfighting following an April raid on the NFL quarterback’s property in Surry County, Virginia. As you may know, authorities reportedly found 66 dogs—including 55 pit bulls, some malnourished, scarred, and wounded—and paraphernalia associated with dogfighting. We share your disgust and are working hard to ensure that justice is done. The 18-page indictment (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/0717072vick1.html) against Vick and three other men (Purnell A. Peace, Quanis L. Phillips, and Tony Taylor) describes a grisly underground enterprise that must have taken careful planning and strategy to put together. A rural piece of property was allegedly purchased specifically for breeding, raising, and training dogs for fighting, and those who did not “perform well” were tortured and killed by hanging, drowning, beating, and electrocution. PETA will be pushing for felony cruelty-to-animals charges to be filed by the Surry County commonwealth’s attorney. PETA has kicked off a string of demonstrations, beginning with a protest at the NFL’s headquarters in New York City (http://www.PETA.org/mc/NewsItem.asp?id=10040), calling on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend Vick. Please sign our petition to Goodell at getactive.peta.org . We also joined hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and civil rights leader The Rev. Al Sharpton in signing a letter to Vick’s corporate sponsor, Goodell, and Falcons CEO Arthur Blank that condemns dogfighting. To view our letter and news release, please see peta.org . PETA is posting regular updates on the Vick case on our Web site peta.org , and we are grateful to the many thousands of people who have responded to our action alert calling for letters to Blank asking for disciplinary action against Vick. We hope that this indictment sends a loud and clear message to players and the NFL that celebrity is not a green light to break the law and that animal abuse will not be tolerated. In addition to signing our petition to the NFL, you can help by writing to Nike, which, although it has suspended the release of a new shoe that bears Vick’s name, continues to sell other Vick merchandise and has so far refused to suspend or terminate its endorsement deal with Vick: Mark G. Parker President and CEO Nike, Inc. One Bowerman Dr. Beaverton, OR 97005-6453 mark.parker@nike.com Please also encourage your local, state, and federal representatives to introduce bills that would increase the penalties for people who organize and/or attend dogfights. If you suspect that animal fighting is taking place in your area, please contact your local animal control or police department right away.
