But we "captured" ALL of western Europe. We didn't KEEP it, did we? We "captured" Japan, all of North Africa, ALL the islands in the Pacific - the ENTIRE ME. We didn't KEEP 'em.

Keeping conquered territory is a distinctly minority position. It's all changed since Rome. It's just not worth the trouble.

We keep where we want bases.

You forgot that Poland kept Gdansk, and Russian kept Konigsberg and 200 miles of eastern Poland. And Czechoslovakia kept the Sudentenland.

Of course, Russia effectively 'kept' all of Eastern Europe from 1945 to 1989. Modern enough for ya?

Go back only a little in time, and we see the US keeping the Phillippines and part of Mexico, like Texas and California and the land in between.

And in a sense, the US did keep Germany and Japan - we occupied them for a long time, we still have bases there, and both have been effectively demiliterized and kept under a US defense shield.
