In a nutshell, the UK and France had no concern for the regions they were drawing up boundaries for. They drew the lines with regard to their own special (short term) interests- dividing up the Kurds, who should have been tucked together in to one country. The Brits imposed a government on Iraq which didn't work, and led to a rebellion, and another bad government, which then led to another rebellion- and the Baath party.
