In view of the fact that the four main political organs of the Palestinians specifically call for the destruction of Israel, with Hamas - the present government - calling for no negotiation on the subject, I find it very disconcerting that those who suggest that Arabs and Palestinians indeed have legitimate grievances nevertheless support them. It's like supporting a police force run by the Mafia, a Mafia that acknowledges its nature and espouses and conducts criminal activity no matter what.

Supporting Hamas, et al, is support entities which will not negotiate and whose goal is to destroy Israel. Until this changes, and the Palestinians genuinely adopt a 'peace and negotiation' option, they are doomed b/c Israel cannot even if it wanted satisfy their demands short of abandoning the country.

No doubt some will say that these avowed goals are fanfare, fodder for the masses. Given the extremely disturbing turn to suicide bombing, I would say that they mean what they say.

I would certainly agree with part of that- although I do think there is a lasting embarrassment to being colonized and subjugated and cheated- even by larger powers.

I also think your comment about what Israel "just" wanted, is a little inaccurate, since Israel wants the land the Arabs think is theirs- and at times they've been happy to shovel Arabs off their land in order to get more for Israel, because what Israel "wants" changes, depending on who is in power. That's a bit more than "just" wanting peace. Note, that does NOT mean I see Israel as illegitimate, nor do I blame them for their existence- I blame the European powers and their stupid guilt for that, and their stupidity does not make Israel illegitimate.

I think anyone who went to Israel thinking Israel "just" wanted peace, or that peace would be possible there, is indeed naive.
