my inside unit recommends filter be clean twice a month or more often if heavy use. i do it faithfully as it restricts the flow of air into the unit.... last week , i took the filter outside to shake it out and use the leaf blower on it.

it was amazing the dust that came out of a filter that looked pretty clean before i started.

Believe it or not, our downstairs A/C has a light that comes on when cleaning is needed... I think it is based on total time used since you just punch a button to turn it off. When the light goes on, I clean both my A/Cs. They usually need it - and that was yesterday, BTW.
