I didn't pay them, I gave them a conservation easement. Accountants do compute FMV for such things however...

The reason they do this is they are interested in trying to actually enforce the treaty rights our great USA government made with them many moons ago regarding water rights and fish habitat. Of course, after making the agreements, the next 100 years or so consisted of hauling in immigrants giving them water rights, and ignoring the NA rights. Only in the last couple of decades have lawsuits seeking redress moved the issue forward. So far, all the NA are trying to do is get a fraction of their treaty rights. If I were them, I'd screw the immigrants and ask for reasonable damages along with interest for all those years. That would be amusing.

So, a little different than just the beauty of my river banks. But you need to understand Ecology as opposed to say Economics in order to understand any of that.
