You have to remember, if they lose the case, they get paid nothing. Unlike the church, they don't have insurance to cover half the cost of the cases they lose. Their costs are in the millions, especially when trying to ferret information out of a monolithic, secretive organization. Yes, their pay is huge, but it can take years to win such a case and they may be putting 10-25% of that amount on the line out of their own pockets to pursue the evidence. The poor and downtrodden don't have insurance, like the Roman Church, or hundreds of top flight lawyers on staff, like the Roman Church. Many do not have the time to fight a protracted battle. They need defenders. The Church is supposed to be one of the defenders, but they turn out to be another oppressor, in many cases. The govt. is of little help after 20 years of the depredations of Reagan and both Bushes. Gutsy trial lawyers are all they've got. Sure, the lawyers are out to make money. But their motivation has no impact on the simple fact that they are giving a voice to the voiceless and defense to the defenseless. Again, something the Church is supposed to do and something, I think, and again, you disagree, the government is supposed to do. Yes, there are plenty of slimeball lawyers out there, but, without the trial lawyers, this country would be one big corporate store where the mighty ruled without any restraint on their whims. I am not calling the trial lawyers noble, though many are. But they are the one part of the power structure that is picking up after the failures of church and govt. And the one part of the power structure who will dare take on the military/industrial complex, the rigged game that is government and, yes, the church, when it is out of line. By contributing to the church, the people who make donations are basically saying they approve of the management of the church. So, just as the individual shareholder doesn't deserve to get creamed when Enron execs turn out to be crooks, the contributors lost their money because they didn't check out the people to whom they are donating. I wonder which insurance cos. are on the line and how they will try to screw the victims out of their fair share?
