I think I may have been thinking of Vicomte de Bragelonne. In English it is usually split into three parts: The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Valliere, and The Man in the Iron Mask.

There was also another chronicles, I think by Dumas but I am not sure, that told the story of Louis XIV mistresses and the intrigues and espionages that were going on the French court. It was an interesting tale of how major decisions of the state can hinge on little petty politics and personal passions.
