Privacy and the Nothing to Hide Argument You say, "Sun, what is your big problem with this issue? If you don't have anything to hide and are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about" Well, my problem with this specific issue is well explained in these two posts: Message 23716626 Message 23716118 Feel free to read them raise any issue you have with them. But I also have a very big problem with your "if you have nothing to hide" argument and others like it. Since I don't want to turn this into a major essay, I am listing my problems with that argument in point form: * Because the government gets to define what's wrong, and they keep changing the definition. * If I'm not doing anything wrong, then you have no cause to watch me. * Because you might do something wrong with my information. * Who watches the watchers? * Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Additionally, the implication of your statement is that the government is infallible (or at least very competent) and also very benevolent. Whereas in reality the government is made up of power hungry scumbag politicians whose incompetence is only limited by the budget they get to spend.
