There had to be some rumors getting out. By that time there was nowhere to go, Sydney. You forget how borders all closed down even during the 30s, and Jews escaping Germany were running blockades and getting turned back from the UN, from Palestine, from nearly anyplace they tried to go to. By 1942 when the Holocaust got going in earnest, it was the middle of WWII and everybody was under martial law and civilians could not travel.
