PAY YOURSELF FIRST, save 10% of your GROSS from day one, put it in the bank or whatever BEFORE you even start with your bills (ie payroll deduction program or something like that).

Yes. It's the theme of "The Richest Man in Babylon." An excellent primer on the subject. But the truth for most people is that they can't or won't do it. If they did it, mandatory Social Security would not be necessary.

You can say, "well, let em starve." But that's not realistic. What used to happen is that the husband would spend everything, die, and leave his widow broke. We aren't going to make 80 year old great-grandmas spend their nights scraping chewing gum off of bank floors.

If it had been privatized from the start, we wouldn't have the mess we have. But, "if wishes were horses..............."

Ha Ha! My husband is a Scottish tightwad and we've been saving at least 10% for quite a few yrs.

It really does add up after awhile.

Bless the Scots!
