Unfortunately, even the bad emperors were smart enough not to debase the bureaucracy. Even the nutty ones knew who collected the money to pay the bills.

What we have now is a "bad emperor" who doesn't know enough to care.

On CNN today, they asked random people at the mall how much they thought the war had cost to date. The answers ranged from less than a billion to a hundred billion. The actual tally as of today is $567 billion. No wonder people are so complacent. Few have a relative or friend fighting and they have no clue how much its costing.
