"...the opportunity to earn our own way." Indeed!

Thanks, KLP, for your thoughtful post.

I remember my first real job. I was eight years old. That would have been in 1937. I got a job selling GRIT magazine door to door. It cost a nickel and I got to keep a penny. Later on, I was able to add Liberty and True Story. I got so good at it that I could tell, when the lady of the house answered the knock, just by looking at her whether she would buy Liberty or True Story.

I saved up my pennies. When I had fifty cents saved, I went to the dry goods store and bought my mother a pair of nylon stockings because that's what I remember her saying that she wanted when she had enough money left over after grocery shopping and paying the rent and the 5 cent per week insurance policies she took out on each of her kids.

I can still see the tears of happiness in her eyes when I handed her the small bag with the nylon stockings.

We didn't know that we had it so good when everything seemed so bad.

Now just a minute KLP

Why the 1946 cutoff date? Things were much the same for us born in 1951 - 1955. Same rules, same lack of modern day conveniences, etc.

Right on!! But I wonder if the kids today have THE GRIT we had. I do marvel at our volunteer armed services but they are the minority of kids, there are just as many or more today looking for a soft ride jdn
