I understand that. It's more satisfying. It sounds nastier and it makes a gesture to the victims. But it's not very accurate.

Both terms are accurate. Arguably homicide bomber might be more accurate. The ultimate goal of a suicide bomber isn't suicide. They could do that at home. The goal is to murder others, albeit at the cost of the murderers life.
