defensive about any criticism of British Raj?

It is easier to lay fault there than to think of alternatives. Remember if the various kingdoms that were geographically what is India today, did not have their kings sign up to the East India Company and its succesors, there would have been no British Raj, and no India - just a bunch of kingdoms.

Arun, Britain was on their way out after two horrific wars and local revolutions against colonial rule. It's not possible to run things if people don't want you to run it. The Americans and British and others in Iraq are learning that at great cost.

Cutting and running and leaving the locals to it is a good idea when there aren't alternatives. If famines and Mugabe's maelstrom results, then that's just how it is.

Iraqis want the USA out. They should not whine when the USA leaves and the cash flow stops and all hell breaks out [things might be unpleasant now, but things can always get worse].

For 175 years, the British were supposedly trying to kill off all the Bengalis. They were not very good at it if that's true. Adolf did a much better job in just a couple of years. The writer says the German exterminators were angels compared with the British. Which is an interesting attitude.

It's just a silly article. And he thinks Britain today should give money to people in Bengal. What a joke. That's like Negroes in the USA wanting money from the government because some of their ancestors were slaves 200 years ago.

It is nearly a lifetime since India took over running their place by themselves. It is almost time to stop blaming the British for the pot holes. Look what Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea and now China have achieved in the same length of time. Not to mention Germany which was well-wrecked by 1945. It's time for India to stop making excuses.
