I don't think this obsessing about what to call the enemy is at all a waste of time.

I don't either. I know it wears on some people but I find the processes of defining, categorizing, differentiating and the like useful. It offers the opportunity to think about different concepts or things and figure out and evaluate what we think and feel about them. The process opens up issues. That's a healthy thing, seems to me, especially about something as important as an enemy.

As for choosing words, if all else fails, I can use the politically correct word despite my distaste. I'd prefer to disabuse folks of their sensitivities to otherwise appropriate words rather than adopt the PC preference but I do generally go along because life's too short to get into fights over the likes of "hearing-impaired."
