It has been interesting. I knew of famines, but not the details [and still don't other than superficially].

As a child, I knew of famines, great depressions, wars and horrors galore. They are entrenched in my mind in a fearful way. I have always worried that such things can return. Luckily, for me, so far they haven't. But there's still time.

A good financial implosion could do it. Some people who seem to know about things such as Warren Buffett and a lot more besides think it's quite possible, even inevitable.

In those days, famines were localized to weather effects and population overload and wars and so on. Now, we have 6 billion people in an integrated system [more or less]. It is an interesting real-time experiment we are conducting.

The Bengal famine could end up looking trivial.

It amazes me how people live beyond their means, fail to save, prepare for a rainy day, a perfect storm etc. Okay, I haven't got my survival pack, gun, water, food, antibiotics and a hut in Montana, but I do have some assets rather than debts and worked hard and early to achieve that.

I suppose I grew up knowing of famines, wars, depressions and saw the effects on my parents and heard of grandparents etc. Fear is a motivator.

The world seems full of hubris these days, with swaggering politicians and populations. Scary stuff. Pride comes before even greater success. No, wait. That's not how the proverb goes.
