I had an interesting encounter with a symbol in Hawaii in the eighties. The place was mobbed by newly wealthy Japanese.

As I strolled up and down the strip in Waikiki, you'd encounter gangs of them at crosswalks, waiting for the "Walk" sign to activate. Americans, Japanese-Americans and Hawaiians just looked both ways and walked if it was safe.

But the Japanese never turned their brains on - they just obeyed the "authority" of the mindless symbol that had no idea of the state of the traffic. They stared at it dutifully. They're ready for THEIR next Hirohito!
